Why should you set “big goals” every month? In short, if you don’t, you will squander your most precious resource: your time.
Time is the one resource that can never be renewed. In the words of Og Mandino, “It cannot be deposited today, to be withdrawn on the morrow, for who can trap the wind.” This is why it is so important that you make every day count, and you do this by setting “big goals,” consistently, because “time” waits on no man.
5 Reasons to Set “Big Goals” Every Month:
1. Big Goals “Focus Your Energy”
“When I was growing up I always wanted to be someone. Now I realize I should have been more specific.” ― Lily Tomlin
I want you to do a quick exercise for me right now, take out a sheet of paper, and write down the one goal that you are working towards this month. If you don’t have one goal that you’re working towards, just write, “I have NO goals! …I’m taking it easy this year.”
Unless your plan is to “take it easy this year,” every single month you should be working towards one significant goal; it could be the same goal every month, but having one goal creates unprecedented focus.
It is the focused person who succeeds: A focused person will accomplish more than a hundred people who are double-minded.
2. Big Goals “Give You a Reason to Be Tenacious”
“Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” ― Louis Pasteur
Scott Reed said, “This one step, choosing a goal and sticking to it, changes everything.”
Albert Einstein commented that it wasn’t that he was “so smart,” he just stuck with problems longer. In Einstein’s pursuit of understanding how light travels, and how light is perceived, he discovered what we now refer to as the “General Theory of Relativity.” But he pondered on the concept for over a decade before he understood it. Have you ever worked on a single problem for over a decade?
The “General Theory of Relativity” is now one of the two pillars of modern physics (right alongside quantum mechanics), all because Einstein was tenacious. You have to be tenacious in order to succeed, big goals give you a reason to be tenacious.
3. Big Goals “Distinguish Your Life From Everyone Else’s”
“Give me a stock clerk with a goal, and I’ll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals, and I’ll give you a stock clerk.” – J.C. Penny
It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a #2 pencil and a piece of paper. A primary differentiator between your life, and everyone else’s, are the goals that you have written down.
You cannot change the conditions in which you were born into, or the country, or family that you were raised in, but you can change your goals.
Decide today to have big goals, …goals so big they change your destiny, goals so big, they change the world.
4. Big Goals “Allow You to Optimize Your Time”
“You have to think anyway, so why not think big?” – Donald Trump
Since you have been granted this precious resource we call time, you might as well use it to your full advantage, and you do this by setting big goals, and by thinking bigger. T. Harv Eker said, “If you think small, you’ll only achieve small things.”
If you’re going to set a goal this month, why not set a big one. By virtue of setting a “big goal,” and committing to achieve that goal by month’s end, you will summon energy that you didn’t realize you had; as you practice this every month, you will turn the impossible, into the inevitable.
5. Big Goals “Give You an Ideal to Aim For”
“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.” – James Allen
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, “The me you see, is the me you will be.” The future you see, is the future you will have; if you can’t see it, then you can’t have it. If you can’t see it, then you don’t qualify for it.
Big goals give you an ideal to aim for, a picture to hold in your mind’s eye until that picture becomes your reality. But it was Charles de Gaulle who said it best, he said, “For glory gives herself only to those who have always dreamed of her.” You have to think big, you have to dream big!
So if you haven’t already, set a big goal this month, do what you’ve been postponing, and surprise yourself.
