I was at lunch the other day, when someone said to the group, “As you get older, it becomes increasingly important that you take care of your health.”
Then another person chimed in, “We all know what to do….we just don’t do it!”
Whether it’s working out, eating right, going back to school, starting a business, or spending time with the family, these words consistently ring true in our lives: “We all know what to do, we just don’t do it!”
But, why don’t we do it?
As that last statement was made during this lunch conversation, the following words came into my mind…words that I have previously quoted many times: I heard the words, “Your habits, will take you further than your desires.”
Your habits…
You can desire something, we all desire things, but unless you have the corresponding habits to support those desires, your desires are nothing more thanfoolish dreams.
To succeed, you have to intentionally create the habits that align with the goal that you are trying to achieve. There are specific habits that are aligned with the achievement of every goal, put those habits into practice, and you will achieve the goal automatically — just as sure as the sun rises in the east and lays it’s head to rest in the west; fail to setup the proper habits, and success will not cease to elude you.
As an example, if your goal is to go back to school to get your degree, you need to create a few habits first. You need to create the habit of prioritizing your school work, you need to create the habit of studying, and you need to create the habit of going to class – you must form these habits in order to be successful in this endeavor.
Habits are like a bridge, they take time to build, but once they’re built, you can travel to your destination with ease.
As you know, success isn’t built on good intentions, great ideas, or the best laid plans of mice and men, success is built and sustained through the remarkable power of habit.
For any goal to be achieved, there’s usually three critical habits that must be in place. Three habits will determine your success.
So tell me, what are the three activities that you should be performing consistently in order to achieve your next goal?
Whatever it is, write it down, commit to practice these activities until they become habits, and soon your habits, will take you to your desires.
Like a train track, your habits will take you to your destination.
And I’ll close with this little secret: “When the proper habits become fully ingrained, it will be harder for you not to achieve the goal, than to achieve the goal.” So put the right habits in place today, so we can watch you succeed tomorrow.
